Alvy Cole


Alvy Thomas "Tom" Cole, age 76, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at the IU Health Bloomington Hospital. He was a resident of Brown County a and former resident of Shelby County, both Indiana.

Tom was born April 2, 1942, in Josephine, West Virginia, to the late Albert Ernest and Annie (Shrewsbury) Cole. He was a 1960 graduate of Stoco High School in Coal City, West Virginia, and went on to serve as an Airman First Class with the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.

He retired in 1998 as a Screw Machine Operator for the Ford Motor Company in Indianapolis after 30 years of service.

Tom was a member of the United Auto Workers Union Local #1111, Fairview United Methodist Church in Fairland and the Acton Masonic Lodge #134. He was also a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

Tom enjoyed the outdoors by hunting, fishing and tending to his yard and garden. He also enjoyed bird watching and feeding the squirrels. Tom and his wife cherished their time traveling the east and west coast and visiting Hawaii. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, great grandchildren and his dog, Tiny.

Tom is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marilyn Sue (Craig) Cole, whom he married on June 24, 1964, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He is also survived by his children, Tammy (John) Sonday of Shelby County and Stephen "Steve" (Cindy Bancroft) Cole of Columbus; grandchildren, Amber (Sam) Moore of Franklin, Ashley (Lonny) Bierman of Sequim, Washington, Alicia (Eddie) Saylor of Shelby County, Addy Courtney of Shelby County, James Adam Cole of Columbus and Steven Melton of Bloomington; siblings, Martha (Allen) Qualls of Lerona, West Virginia, and Willie Dale Cole of Josephine, WV; and 13 great grandchildren.

Tom was preceded in death by siblings Lorene Farley, Albert E. Jr., Buck, Gene, Joel, John, Richard and Carlos Cole.

The Rev. Steven Walker will conduct a funeral service on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown, IN. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until service time on Sunday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown with military rites presented by the Martinsville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guards.
