The Arc of Shelby County is set to host its third annual golf outing to help those with intellectual and physical challenges.

And the group is looking for golfers and sponsors to join in.

On June 7, participants will gather at Bear Chase Golf Club, 2660 N. Riley Hwy, for a day on the links to raise money that will support the work of the Arc and related groups.

Last year’s event raised almost $15,000, and Don Collins, president of the Arc of Shelby County, is hoping for another great turnout.

One lucky golfer could be a big winner, he said.

“This year we’ll have a $10,000 hole-in-one contest,” said Collins.

The Arc supports the efforts of the Shelbyville VC Aktion Club, a branch of Kiwanis for people with developmental issues. The club has more than 60 members.

Over the past nine years, the local Aktion Club has given some $30,000 to local nonprofits through its fundraising efforts, such as an annual car wash.

In addition, the Arc supports SENSES Gym, 1110 Amos Road, a sensory stimulation playroom founded by Collins and his daughter, Holly Forville, that’s open to all children ages 1 to 6.

SENSES Gym is especially helpful for kids with neural processing issues such as autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The gym is due to become part of the new preschool facility Shelbyville Central Schools is creating at the former Marsh Supermarket building, 1015 E. State Road 44. The facility is scheduled to open in 2019.

Also, the Arc of Shelby County has donated more than 100 books about nearly every type of intellectual and physical disability to the Shelby County Public Library to help local families.

Those interested in playing in the June 7 golf fundraiser for the Arc, or becoming a sponsor of the event, may contact Collins at 317-398-6708.

Registration forms are available at Linne’s Bakery and Cafe, 115 S. Harrison St.; Mickey’s T-Mart, 748 S. Harrison St.; Sanders Jewelry Store, 16 S. Harrison St.; and Subway, 1646 E. State Road 44.
