Farmers Market set to open at new location

Crews have just about wrapped up work on the West Washington Street parking lot across from the former location of Major Hospital. The revamped lot will host the seasonal Shelbyville Farmers Market. The first of the weekly 2018 Farmers Markets opens at 8 a.m. Saturday.

On Saturday, patrons will no longer have to dodge cars on the Public Square to shop at the Farmers Market.

The market is scheduled to open for the first time in 2018 at its new location on West Washington Street at the site of the former parking lot for Major Hospital.

Named “West Washington Street Plaza,” the revamped lot will house the Farmers Market along with other public events, according to Mainstreet Shelbyville, the nonprofit group that promotes the downtown area.

Brandy Coomes, executive director of the local Mainstreet organization, said merchants seem enthused about the new location, judging from a recent meeting.

“We had a lot of new vendors show up,” she said, even some from outside Shelby County.

In preparation for the expanded use of the West Washington Street Plaza, the lot’s been repaved and electrical outlets have been installed.

Also, a Japanese-style garden is planned to go in just to the south of the existing playground area, which is actually a city park.

Flowers will be planted at the plaza site, and permanent signage is also planned to mark the location, Coomes said.

To inaugurate the new West Washington Community Plaza, the Farmers Market on Saturday will feature live music by local artist Darrin Isaac, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The market itself is due to open at 8 a.m. and continue until noon as well.

Shelbyville Farmers Market 2018 will take place each Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon starting May 19 and going into October.
