One Shelby County resident died and another was taken to an Indianapolis hospital for injuries following an accident in Madison County on Saturday morning.

David Kirk, 58, of Gwynneville, died and Brandon Hanson, 39, also of Gwynneville, was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis after they were struck by a driver at a construction site.

The initial investigation found that a northbound SUV, driven by Raymond Cain Jr., 65, of Anderson, struck the two men who were doing construction work on the White River bridge at 8 a.m. Saturday, according to Scott Mellinger of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.

The two Shelby County residents were employees of AK Shannon Excavating company, which was contracted by Madison County to perform bridgework that morning.

The accident occurred on County Road 600 West, south of County Road 200 North.

Hanson was taken to the hospital with pelvic and leg injuries. Cain Jr. was evaluated at the scene by emergency personnel but did not need treatment.

The investigation is ongoing and a blood sample by Cain Jr. was to be tested, as state law requires.
