Street Dept. announces heavy trash week

Shelbyville’s annual Fall Clean-Up will run from Oct. 1 through Oct. 5.

The Fall Clean-Up program will take place on the same day as regular trash pick-up. All trash and other items should be set out by 7 a.m. Because of the volume of trash being collected during this time, your trash may be picked up at a different time than usual.

The city will pick up almost any item during this one-week period as long as it is not a hazardous material or one that requires special handling. Items not being collected include tires of any kind, fluorescent bulbs, concrete, computers, or paint in a liquid form. Freezers, refrigerators or air conditioners will not be picked up unless they are tagged showing that the freon gas has been removed professionally.

Yard waste material in any type of plastic bags also cannot be collected. The landfill yard waste site will not accept plastic bags. Yard waste should be put in a container marked “yard waste” or in paper yard waste bags.

All items are to be set out in a neat and orderly fashion and separated by type, such as wood, metal, etc. Do not set out items any earlier than is absolutely necessary, keep them clear of the sidewalks, streets and alleyways.

Television and computer monitors will not be picked up during the Fall Clean-Up. Televisions and other electronics can be dropped off at the Shelbyville Street Department throughout the year, at no charge.

There will be a limit to four mattresses per stop and any furniture with visible, live bed bugs will not be collected. Residents will be responsible for disposing of those items elsewhere.

Oct. 5 will be the last day that heavy trash will be collected. The city will return to the normal trash pick-up which includes having trash bagged and in containers. Any heavy trash left out after this time frame will be subject to a fine.

Recycling will not be collected during this week of clean-up. The Fall Clean-Up is for one week only.
