James tops area runners at Whiteland Invitational

Area cross country teams competed in the Whiteland Invitational on Tuesday.

On the boys’ side, Waldron’s Jacob James finished second overall in 16:50 to lead local runners. Shelbyville’s Matt Baker was seventh in 17:31 and teammate Joe Lux was 10th in 17:55 to help the Golden Bears (97) finish in third. New Pal (26) won the meet with Whiteland coming in second (45).

Southwestern was led by Kirk VanGorden, who was 30th in 19:29. Teammate Riley Snepp was 33rd in 19:33 and Blake Dunbar was 63rd in 20:49.

Nathaniel Warfield was the top runner for Morristown, finishing 54th overall in 20:31. Drake Deak was 68th in 21:07 and Ron Creech was 62nd in 21:55. Logan Yost finished in 22:20 and Ryan Carlton in 23:04.

Also for the Mohawks, Ethan Trueblood was 24th overall in 19:16. Stewart Douglas finished in 21:59 and Brock Bowen in 24:08.

Taige Mummert (27th, 19:23), Michael Fox (34th, 19:34) and Michael Lay (37th, 19:48) paced the Golden Bears

Also for the Spartans, Elias Clark finished in 22:25, Jaydon Haymond in 22:48, Ethan Wendling in 23:25, Keegan Weaver in 25:48 and Ryan Griffin in 27:35.

On the girls’ side, Waldron’s Madeline Douglas was sixth overall (21:07) to lead all Shelby County runners.

Shelbyville was fifth overall (131) as a team and was led by Hannah Lux, who was 11th in 21:30, and Braelyn Stacy, who was 18th in 21:57. New Pal (15) won the girls’ meet with Whiteland (68) finishing in second.

For SW, Jenna Kuntz was 32nd in 23:47, while Morgan Clark was 38th in 24:05. Madison VanGorden was 48th in 24:26.

Rylee Kleine was the lone competitor for Morristown, finishing in 53rd in 24:32.

Also for WHS, Bella Larrison was 16th in 21:36 and Victoria Shaw was 55th in 24:55. Lexi Rader finished in 26:24 and Haley Redelman in 31:08.

Also for the Spartans, Maggie Goodin finished in 25:36, Gracie Schlabach in 26:23, Regan Mangrum in 26:32 and Karmen Kissell in 28:54.

Jill Anspaugh (22nd, 22:49), Megan Eads (49th, 24:26) and Taylor Bigerman (62nd, 25:19) paced the Golden Bears

SHS falls to Mt. Vernon

The Shelbyville soccer team held a 2-0 lead over Mt. Vernon Tuesday in the second half of its HHC contest but eventually fell 3-2 after a comeback from the Marauders.

Trae Hassebroek and Evan Witte each scored once for the Golden Bears. Cameron Baker played exceptionally well in the midfield, head coach Ben Purvis said, and Tim Clark was the setup man for most of the team’s attack Tuesday.

Morristown ties Cristo Rey

The Morristown soccer team tied with Providence Cristo Rey on Tuesday, 5-5.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Kameron Crim, who had three goals on the night. His younger brother, Kyle Crim, added two more goals and an assist.

Goalie Jordan Battles finished the game with 10 saves on 13 shots.

Hauser gets by Waldron

The Waldron tennis team was defeated by Hauser on Tuesday, 1-4.

Shawn Cole earned the lone win for the Mohawks at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

Spartans edged by Greenwood Christian

The Southwestern golf team fell to Greenwood Christian on Tuesday, 218-219.

Riliegh Smith led the Spartans with a round of 53. Lilly Kerber shot a 54, Maggie Correll a 55 and Gracie Lee a 57. Keira Zeigler and Deziree Norvell each finished with 58’s.

Golden Bears top Greensburg

The Shelbyville volleyball team beat Greensburg on Tuesday, 3-0. The Golden Bears won 25-21, 25-21, 25-15.

Macey Kuhn led the offense with 13 kills in a standout performance. Grace Laker added seven kills and Izzy Lewis and Kira Wilder combined for 39 assists. Audrey Reinhart had a team-high 18 digs.

SHS is now 9-5.
