William Steward

William "Bill" Wray Steward passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018, with his beloved wife of nearly 54 years by his side. He fought a long and courageous battle with lung cancer and his strength and courage will forever be remembered.

He was born on Oct. 21 ,1945, to Wray Steward and Daisy Jean (Haggard) Steward at Major Hospital in Shelbyville, Indiana. During his formative years, he moved many times back and forth between Shelbyville and Gulfport, Miss.; he called both his home until landing in New Palestine, Ind., in 1982 for 36 years his final home.

In January of 1965, he met Mary B. Perry. On April 10, 1965, they married the love of each other's lives. They had two sons, Tom and Dan. Bill worked for Mitchel and Scott Machine for 40-plus years, retiring in 2006 as Gage Lab Coordinator. His retirement years were devoted to caring and playing with his granddaughters, Danielle and Amanda — his pride and joy. He was always ready to announce their accomplishments to anyone who would listen. He enjoyed a second career of Metal Art Fabrication, many of his creations can be found in Mary's flower gardens as well as yards and gardens throughout Hancock County. He was a 40-plus year member of Englewood Masonic Lodge #715 in Indianapolis. Bill's total devotion to God, family, and home defined who he was; a kind and loving soul, who could be as hard as nails or as soft and gentle as a summer rain.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roger Dale Steward; son, William Thomas Steward; and grandson, Thomas Wray Steward. He is survived by his wife, Mary; and son, Daniel (Jeannette) Steward of Shelbyville, Ind.; granddaughters, Danielle Rene Steward of Shelbyville, Ind., and Amanda Jean Steward of Shelbyville, Ind.; as well as his wonderful fur-companions, Boss, Maddie, and Beau.

Friends may gather in Bill's memory on Friday, Nov. 9, 2018, from noon to 1 p.m. at Hendryx Mortuary in New Palestine Chapel, 19 E. Main St., New Palestine, IN 46163, with a memorial service following visitation at 1 p.m. at the mortuary.
