Kuhn named Hoosier Heritage Conference Player of Week

Shelbyville senior guard Zach Kuhn, pictured with SHS head coach Ryan Mack, was named HHC Player of the Week for breaking the Golden Bears' all-time scoring record over the weekend.

The Hoosier Heritage Conference released its weekly reports for basketball. 

Boys player of the week

Week 2: Zach Kuhn, Shelbyville

Kuhn became Shelbyville’s career scoring leader, passing Harry Larrabee’s mark of 1,370 that had stood since 1970. He had 28 points and 12 boards against Columbus North, then followed with 21 points in a win over Connersville.

Week 1: Luke Bumbalough, New Castle

Bumbalough had 30 points and 15 boards in a victory over Greenwood.

Girls players of the week

Hannah Farrell, Greenfield-Central

Farrell had a big week, tallying 91 points in the three contests. She had 35 points and 10 boards against LC, as well as 30 points and 11 rebounds against Chatard.

Jordan Reid, New Palestine

Reid helped the Dragons post a 2-0 start with victories over New Castle and Delta. She totaled 31 points and 17 rebounds in the two contests and also sparked NP’s defense.

Boys notes

Seven of the eight HHC teams have opened their seasons, with New Palestine postponing its first three games due to its football state title. Conference play opens this week with a full slate of games Friday night, including three rivalry games, NP at G-C, PH at MV and Delta at Yorktown, as well as New Castle hosting Shelbyville. The NP/G-C and NC/Shelby tilts are doubleheaders.

Josh Bryan had another big week for Delta. He tallied 74 points in three games, leading the Eagles to wins over Cowan, Bluffton and Winchester. He also averaged 6.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.0 steals in the three games, moving the Eagles to 4-0. Jacob Cochran had 14 points, three rebounds and two steals for Greenfield-Central in a loss to Perry Meridian.

Damieon Warrum averaged 14.7 points and 5.0 rebounds in Pendleton Heights’ week, in which the Arabians went 2-1.

Luke Bumbalough averaged 30 ppg for New Castle in two defeats.

Zach Kuhn, who is third in the HHC at 22 ppg, became Shelbyville’s all-time scoring leader during Friday’s game against Columbus North. His teammate, Josh Williams, is fifth in scoring in the HHC at 16.8 ppg.

Girls notes

The HHC race heats up with four teams, Mt. Vernon, New Palestine, Yorktown, Shelbyville and Greenfield-Central, just getting started. Meanwhile, Pendleton Heights will play its sixth conference game this week.

Mt. Vernon moved to 1-0 in conference play with a 48-35 victory over Pendleton Heights. Sydnee Perry had 11 points and five boards. Abby Worley added eight points for MV.

New Palestine had balanced efforts in moving to 2-0 in HHC play. Jordan Reid had 14 points and nine boards, while Leah Seib added 11 points Tuesday in a 58-37 victory over New Castle. Saturday, Seib scored 18 and Jordan Reid 17 in a 75-26 victory over Delta.

Among other strong performances, Lea Alexander and Elizabeth Reece each scored 20 points in a 65-38 victory over Guerin Catholic. Tobi Bell had a double-double, with a career-high 16 rebounds. The trio also scored in double-figures in a win over Lapel.

Greenfield-Central’s Hannah Farrell averaged 30.3 points for the week as the Cougars went 1-2. She had double-doubles against Chatard (30 points/11 rebounds) and Lawrence Central (35/10). She tallied 26 points against Muncie Central.
