Michael Anthony Cantrell II, 37, born June 7, 1981, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019, in Portales, N.M.

Michael moved to Fort Sumner, N.M. in 1983, attended Fort Sumner Public Schools K-12, graduating in 1999. Michael excelled in basketball, football, and track, and was honored with the Fox Award in 1999. He was a member of the 1995 and 1998 Fox State Football Championship teams and the 1999 State Track Championship team.

Michael attended ENMU Portales. After college, Michael took a position with the City of Portales Water Department where he worked nine years. Currently, he was working for Double J Construction in Fort Sumner.

Michael is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Rev. Richard Rasche in 1984, paternal grandfather, Art Cantrell in 2018, aunt, Margaret Cantrell, and brother, Josh Kenyon in 2008.

Survivors include his parents, Mike and Cheryl Cantrell of Lake Sumner, N.M.; his maternal grandmother, Phyllis Rasche of Shelbyville; paternal grandmother, Rita Cantrell of Albuquerque; a brother, Chris Cantrell of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; sisters, Shauna Walker of Paradise, Texas and Krista Kimball of Saint Francesville, La.; his uncle, David Rasche (Peggy) of Waldron; their children, Jaime Willis (Bryan) and Lindsey Rasche (Cody Schutt), both of Shelbyville; cousins, Brianna, Nicholas, and Makayla, all of Shelbyville; aunts, Patty McCants of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. and Terri Bitteroff (Scott) of Minot, N.D.; and an uncle, Dwayne Cantrell of Albuquerque.

Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019, at The Church on The Hill in Fort Sumner with Pastor Anna Teeter-Gentile and Mr. Richard Terrell officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home, 830 N. Fifth Street, Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
