Mohawks track and field teams win Panther Invitational

The Waldron track and field teams won the Panther Invitational on Friday in Knightstown. Sophomore Tyler Bowlby earned two second-place finishes for WHS.


The Waldron track and field teams brought home two trophies Friday evening on a windy night for high school spring sports. 

Final scores for the boys’ side of the meet were: Waldron 121, Shenandoah 103, Knightstown 76, South Decatur 72, Milan 55, North Decatur 45, Tri 33 and Indiana Math & Science 24. 

Waldron’s Jacob James led the boys’ team by winning the 800-meter run, the 1,600 and the 3,200. James ran with Ethan Trueblood, Shawn Cole and Ian Carter to take first in the 3,200 relay.

Also for the Mohawks, Dalen Williams won the discus and shot put, while Tyler Bowlby was second in the 100 and the long jump. Bowlby also competed in high jump, finishing fourth. 

Trueblood was second in the 3,200 and the 1,600 to also score for WHS. Will Montgomery was second in shot put and third in discus. 

No individual results were available for the girls. 

The Waldron boys are 11-0 this season. The girls are 10-1. 

Spartans top Yellow Jackets, Lancers

The Southwestern track and field teams earned wins over Morristown and Edinburgh on Thursday. 

The Spartan boys won their side of the meet with 99 points. Morristown was second with 49. Edinburgh did not score a point. For the girls, Southwestern won with 89 points. Morristown scored 65 and Edinburgh finished with one. 

For the SW boys, Drew Drake won high jump and long jump, Blake McClure won shot put and discus, Keegenn Weaver won the 110 hurdles, Broc Kissell won the 300 hurdles and Kirk Van Gorden won the 800 and 1,600. 

Morristown’s boys were led by Trevon Carlton, who was first in the 100 and 200. Jacob Batten won the 400 and Ron Creech, Aidan Stoner, Zavier Poole and Nathaniel Warfield came together to win the 3,200 relay.

For the SW girls, Abby Muck won the 100, the 200 and long jump. Maggie Correll took first in high jump. Taylor Tatlock won discus and Kennedy Pile won shot put.

For MT, Rylee Kleine was on the winning 3,200 relay team and also took first in the 800 and 1,600, while Alison Warfield won four blue ribbons (both hurdle events and two relays). 

SHS tops No. 2 CN

The Shelbyville baseball team defeated 4A No. 2 Columbus North 4-3 on Thursday.

SHS opened up the scoring in the second inning, when Jaeden Carter’s sac fly scored one run.

The Golden Bears took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth, Carter singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run. Benny Thompson then drew a walk, scoring one run, and Eadin Balting singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run.

Balting earned the win for SHS. He lasted seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out one.

Konner Stahl took the loss for Columbus North. He lasted three innings, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out one.

Shelbyville saw the ball well Thursday, racking up nine hits in the game. Balting, Colin Mahin and Zach Rupert each racked up multiple hits.

Blake Huffman went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Columbus North in hits. Columbus North was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error.

The Golden Bears returned to action Friday at home against Mt. Vernon in HHC action. SHS lost both games. The team fell 13-3 in Game 1 and 12-2 in Game 2.

Southwestern sweeps Waldron

The Southwestern baseball team swept Waldron in games on Thursday and Friday. The Spartans won 6-0 on Thursday and 16-1 on Friday.

Anthony Atwood led SW with two hits on Thursday, including a double.


TC eases past HC

The Triton Central softball team beat Heritage Christian 16-1 in five innings on Thursday.

The team totaled 14 hits with six players finishing with two or more. Jaime Pyle led TC with four RBIs. Addison Meier hit a home run for the Tigers.

MT falls to Irvington Prep

The Morristown softball team fell to Irvington Prep on Thursday, 5-4.

Kassidy Cowell pitched for the Yellow Jackets, allowing five runs on five hits, two walks and two hit batters while striking out 10.

Offensively, Kristen Whitney had a double and two runs scored. Emily Hardwick added a RBI double. Delaney Cornn had a double. Kaylin Waltz and Alyssa Guffey both had a single and a run scored.

Mohawks drop two

The Waldron softball team fell to Oldenburg 5-4 on Thursday in a close game.

Maddie Robinson, Amanda Brinson and Makayla Scudder had two hits each for WHS. Abby Adams hit a triple.

On Friday, Waldron fell to Shortridge, 13-10.

SHS drops match to Marauders

The Shelbyville tennis team traveled to Mt. Vernon Thursday, dropping the match 0-5. Sophomore Grace Coomes came close to getting a win at No. 2 singles but just missed the victory in a third set tiebreaker.

Coomes, who is a second-year varsity starter, dropped the first set 1-6 before regrouping to earn the win in the second set 6-4. A 10-point tiebreaker was utilized to determine the winner with Coomes coming up a little short with a 7-10 loss.

Junior varsity winners on the day included Raelyn Butler and Jaidyn Tackett.

The Golden Bears are on the road Monday to face county rival Waldron.

TC wins over MT

The Triton Central tennis team beat Morristown 4-1 on Thursday.

Kenzie Logan defeated TC’s Emily LeMasters 7-6 (6), 6-3 at No. 1 singles for the only win for the Yellow Jackets.

At No. 2 singles, Maya Chandler handled Gabby Ibarra 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Rylie Stephens beat Emma Theobald 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles play at No. 1, Julia Sanders and Ainsley Denton topped Blaire Harriman and Kirsten Payne 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2, Alli Eck and Myles Glackman beat Karli Manship and Kaylenn Sanford 6-1, 6-0.

SW remains undefeated

The Southwestern tennis team improved to 5-0 on Friday with a 4-1 win over Knightstown.

Jenna Kuntz won against Maggie Smith 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Abby Sweet beat Ladaya Berrier 6-0, 6-0. At No. 3, Emma Engel topped Luci Andrent 6-3, 6-2 to secure the singles sweep.

The No. 1 doubles team of Hailey Bowman and Abby Marshall also won, beating Brynnlee Walters and Dani Davis 6-0, 6-1.

WHS tops Lutheran

The Waldron tennis team beat Lutheran 3-2 on Thursday.

Caroline Sheaffer won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Victoria Robledillo won her No. 2 singles match 6-3, 7-5. She came from down 0-5 to win her second set. The No. 1 doubles duo of Mackenzie Shaw and Nichole Garner won 6-3, 6-3.

SW shoots a 180

The Southwestern golf team shot a 180 on Thursday to top Morristown (203) and Edinburgh (259).

For the Spartans, Austin Blocher carded a 42 to earn medalist honors. Blake Schneider finished with a 44, Decklan Pappano a 46 and Nick Robinson a 48.

For the Yellow Jackets, Bryce Kirstein shot a 45, Sawyer Jones a 51, Kameron Crim a 52 and Ely Wiggins a 55.

On Friday, MT battled Rushville and fell 213-223.

Kirstein fired a 42 for medalist honors. Jones shot a 55, Wiggins a 62 and Crim a 64.
