Watson scores win against state-ranked Franklin

The Shelbyville tennis team knew it had a tough match in front of them as the Franklin Community team came to town Thursday. Although SHS lost the match 1-4, there was a shining moment on the court as Shelbyville's No. 1 singles player Alex Watson scored the win in a third-set tiebreaker.

Watson came out of the gate strong, leading most of the set and eventually getting the advantage over her opponent, Alexa Wilkinson. However, Wilkinson came rolling back to win the second set. Watson got the lead early in the third set tiebreaker, but Wilkinson fought back again, tying the score and then taking the lead for match point at 9-8. Watson survived the pressure spot, winning three points in a row to secure the lone victory for the SHS team 7-5, 3-6, 11-9. Both players used offensive strategy with well-placed shots throughout the entire contest for a well-played match.

Adeline Haacker also came close to a win at No. 3 singles. The sophomore held on in a close first set before dropping the second set. A long third-set tiebreaker determined the match with Haacker barely missing the win 7-5, 3-6, 9-11.

The match against Franklin was the final regular season contest of 2019. The three seniors on the SHS team were honored Thursday. Jade Roell, Lily Gulley and Addison Mummert were all introduced following the match and were joined by family members for the presentation.
