IHSAA releases sectional tennis pairings

Shelbyville's No. 1 singles player Alex Watson leads the Golden Bears into sectional action today.

The IHSAA released sectional tennis pairings Monday.

Shelbyville again hosts the sectional this season and opens tournament play Wednesday against Southwestern.

The winner of SW-SHS will play Waldron Thursday. The winner of that match advances to the championship.

Triton Central is paired against Morristown, which is scheduled for Thursday. The winner of MT-TC advances to the title match.

Semifinal winners will play Friday for the sectional championship.

Quick thoughts: This is a balanced field. The Shelby County Tournament was a battle. Mix in Shelbyville and things become very interesting. The Tigers won county but Triton Central, Southwestern and Waldron have all played close matches this season.

The host Golden Bears have played Waldron this season, winning 5-0, and Triton Central, losing 0-5. SHS plays a difficult schedule and has talent with Alex Watson (No. 1 singles) and Gabbie Knox and Addison Mummert (No. 1 doubles) leading the way.

What makes TC, which is 13-1, dangerous is its depth. The team has a very solid No. 1 doubles team with Julia Sanders and Ainsley Denton, who were named all-conference. Add in an athletic set of singles players and the Tigers become very difficult to beat. Moving Rylie Stephens and Maya Chandler to singles this season after playing No. 1 doubles last year was a smart move by head coach Austin Hall.

Waldron is strong in doubles play with Amanda Brinson and Mackenzie Shaw at No. 1 and Nichole Garner and Megan Bogemann at No. 2, while Southwestern's top singles players, Jenna Kuntz, Abby Sweet and Hailey Bowman are having impressive seasons.

Morristown singles players Kenzie Logan and Emma Theobald have been very competitive for the Yellow Jackets.
