HBPA's Grand Experience set for Saturday

The Indiana Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) will host its second installment of “Grand Experience” Saturday at Indiana Grand. The free event tagged with the title “The Barn Door is Always Open” is available to guests of all ages seeking a unique look at Thoroughbred horse racing.

The second in a series of five events planned for 2019, “Grand Experience” offers a different topic each month. The June event will explore the backstretch with a trip to one of the barns at Indiana Grand. Racing personnel will provide a tour of a working Thoroughbred racing barn and answer questions about what it takes to prepare a horse for racing. Guests will have the opportunity to interact with real Thoroughbreds during the tour.

“Grand Experience” begins at 9 a.m. Guests may either drive directly to the Backstretch Café located on the back side of the racetrack at the Horsemen’s Entrance or they may come to the grandstand area and ride the shuttle service to the restaurant. The Backstretch Café, which is open to the public, provides a perfect setting for morning workouts. Those in attendance may watch the horses on the track while enjoying a free breakfast from a selected menu. Board members of the Indiana HBPA will then provide the barn tour which begins roughly at 9:30 a.m.

Other upcoming topics in 2019 includes “Out to Lunch” at Noon Saturday, July 20 for a trip to Katie and Antonio Duran’s breeding farm just north of Shelbyville, “Boots ‘n Brews” tied in with racing at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, and “Come Along for the Ride” at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 for a tour of the jockey’s quarters with retired jockey, actor and chaplain Otto Thorwarth.
