“It’s everything that I did my whole life — I worked so hard for this,” said 2019 Shelby County Royal Showmanship winner Dani Bassett with tears in her eyes.

Bassett and five other participants showed six livestock species Wednesday night at the Shelby County Fairgrounds.

The six species shown were swine, dairy cattle, horse and pony, goats, sheep and beef cattle.

Some of the species appeared harder to handle than others, especially the beef cattle. At one point, a cow got away from a competitor.

Bassett said she didn’t think there was a livestock species that was harder to handle than the others.

“I don’t have a hardest because I showed all of them before and I knew how each and every one of them would handle,” she said.

As the overall winner, Basset received the Gold Award, the Belt Buckle Award, The Showmanship Royal Banner and a gift basket.

Bassett also received the $250 Erin O’Neil Memorial Scholarship, a separate award that honors Erin O’Neil, a long time 4-H member who died in a car accident in 2016.

Bassett will use the scholarship toward her tuition at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, where she is majoring in equine business management and minoring in equine assisted therapy and equine rehabilitation therapy.

Each showing had a different judge, and all judges gave praise to all six competitors.

The other five competitors were Hannah Everhart, Haley Koch, Hannah Sullivan, Katie Mills and Megan Bogemann.

The event was sponsored by the Shelby County 4-H Advisory Council, Shelby Farm Supply, Inc., Shelby County Beef Producers, Shelby County Dairy Farmers, Shelby Materials, Horse & Pony Support Committee, Shelby County Sheep Association, and Farm Credit Services.
