Freeport man dies in I-74 accident

STAFF REPORT

A Freeport, Indiana, man died and his mother was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where she was listed in stable condition, as a result of an accident on Interstate 65 North in Shelby County early Sunday morning.

Kenneth Cubbage Jr., 41, of Freeport, 14 miles west of Seymour, died from injuries sustained in the accident. His mother, Connie, 62, was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

First responders were sent to the scene after receiving 9-1-1 calls around 2:45 a.m. Sunday of a vehicle that went off the road near the 82-mile marker with two people severely injured.

Investigators are still unsure why the vehicle left the road, but evidence indicated the vehicle hit a tree and rolled several times.

The driver, Cubbage Jr., was wearing a seatbelt. His mother was not.

Both directions on the interstate were briefly closed. The northbound lanes were closed for around two hours while debris from the wreck was removed and police investigated the accident.
