Monument to be unveiled Monday at crash site

At 11 a.m. Monday, exactly 50 years to the date of the Allegheny Airlines crash in northwest Shelby County, a monument will be unveiled at the crash site.

A small service will be held at the site off London Road near Shady Acres Trailer Park. Several family members of those that died that day are expected to be in attendance to honor the 83 men and women that died.

A son and grandson of Allegheny Airlines captain James Elrod will speak at the event which will include several local officials.

The ceremony is open to the public but parking in the area is limited.

To keep the area from being overwhelmed by automobiles, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department will offer an escort from Shelbyville at 10:30 a.m. Those wishing to partake this option, should meet at the sight of the former Holiday Inn, 1804 N. Riley Highway in Shelbyville.
