A variety of meat provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2695 in Shelbyville and entertainment provided by a disabled veteran are among the highlights for an event celebrating the 75th anniversary of the local post.

A flag retirement ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday and the Diamond Jubilee celebration, which is open to the public, will start at 5 p.m. with a meal.

The actual anniversary for Post 2695 is Oct. 12, but organizers moved the celebration up a week because Greenfield’s Post 4736 is also celebrating the same anniversary one week from now. Shelbyville’s Post 2695 Quartermaster Edith Toll Seiler said Greenfield organizers began planning their event sooner and Shelbyville did not want to conflict with that celebration, so the local anniversary event was moved up a week.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, pork chops, country fried steak sandwiches and fish will be offered by the VFW for the local celebration while supplies last, Toll Seiler said.

“A lit bit of everything,” she said.

The VFW, located at 1622 E. State Road 44 in Shelbyville, asks that those attending provide side dishes. The organization also ordered a cake from Kroger.

Entertainment by Rockin’ Rich, a disabled veteran who performs at various posts and American Legions, will start at 6 p.m.

At 7 p.m., a Henry .30-30 rifle that the post won in a membership contest last year will be raffled off. Tickets were still available as of Thursday morning, Toll Seiler said.

There will also be a few door prizes handed out.

“I’m kind of excited about it,” she said. “Actually, I’m very excited about it. It’s going to be a nice time.”
