Local organizations band together for river cleanup

STAFF REPORT

Shelbyville Storm Water Utility is teaming up with the Shelby County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Shelby County Solid Waste District, the Lower Big Blue River Watershed, Shelbyville Parks and Recreation Department, and American Rivers to host a cleanup day on the Big Blue and Little Blue rivers.

Volunteers are welcome to assist. The cleanup begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kennedy Park, 200 Minster Drive in Shelbyville. Groups will split up and remain on public property to work.

Volunteers 18 or older can join a small group floating the rivers. That group will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at Kennedy Park. You must provide your own boat and life jacket.

Previous river cleanups have been a huge success. Tons of trash have been removed from the watershed.

With the heavy rains this spring washing more debris into the rivers, help is needed to clean up.

For more information, to sign up to volunteer, or coordinate cleanup of your private property, contact City of Shelbyville’s MS4 Director Derrick Byers at 317-392-5102, ext. 316 or dbyers@cityofshelbyvillein.com.
