Joyce Slaven


Joyce A. Slaven, 79, of Fairland, passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019, at MHP Medical Center.

Born May 3, 1940, in Monticello, Kentucky, she was the daughter of George Woody and Geneva (Meredith) Woody. She married Oran Ray Slaven and he survives.

Other survivors include three children, Donald Ray Slaven (wife, Anita) of Shelbyville, Michael Slaven (wife, Thresa) of Morristown, Chastity Crain (husband, Joey) of Shelbyville; a sister, Shirley Simpson of Monticello, Ky.; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Oran Eugen Slaven; several brothers and sisters; and grandson, Jeremy Slaven.

Mrs. Slaven had lived over 60 years in this area, after moving from Kentucky. She had been a cook at the old Chicken & Steak Inn for many years, and also had been a door greeter with Walmart for several years. She was a member of the Fairland Christian Church.

Joyce enjoyed traveling, shopping, going out to eat, and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019, at Glenn E. George & Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, with Pastor Les Beardon officiating.

Burial will be in Fairland Cemetery.

Friends may call on Tuesday morning from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.
