Registration for the 2020-21 school year at the Golden Bear Preschool is now open, and depending on the demand, the school could grow.

The preschool reached the halfway point of its first year with winter break and is now accepting applications for its second year.

With one of the 15 rooms unoccupied and another used for before and after school care, there is room to grow. The school started the school year with 255 students enrolled and depending on how many applications are turned in, the school could add those two rooms for instructional purposes.

“We would like to expand if possible,” principal Lora Nigh said. “We’ve got the space.”

Completed applications for new students should include the application, a copy of a birth certificate, a copy of immunization records, the home language survey, the race and ethnicity form and proof of residency. There is also a non-refundable $50 registration fee that should be made payable to Shelbyville Central Schools.

Parents of returning students will need to turn in an application and the registration fee.

The preschool offers half-day and all-day programs for children ages 3 to 5.

The half-day runs from 8 to 10:40 a.m. in the morning classes and from 11:50 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the afternoon. Dismissal is at 10:20 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

The full day programs run from 8:10 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. with dismissal at 2:10 p.m. on Wednesday.

Each program has various options depending on the age of the child and number of days he or she will be at school and as a result, the cost varies.

Students for both half- and full-day programs will need to be fully toilet-trained prior to the start of the school year and be at least three years old before Aug. 1.

Nigh encouraged parents to enroll their child early.

“If they want to come in, we’re happy to give tours,” she said, adding some families have already taken advantage of the offer.

Parents would need to set up a time to take a tour, she said.

The application can be found on the preschool website under the “Parents” tab at
