As we approach the holiday season, Major Health Partners wants to encourage people to make sure they are fully vaccinated and have received the booster if they are eligible so they can safely gather with friends and family.

Children ages 5-11 can now get a Covid-19 vaccine in the United States. The CDC approved the vaccine Nov. 2 after the FDA gave emergency use authorization.

The CDC has reported over 8,000 children in the U.S. ages 5-11 years old have been hospitalized due to Covid. In the trials of the pediatric vaccine, it was found to be 90.7 percent effective in preventing a serious covid-19 infection. It is a two-dose series given three weeks apart, just like the adult version of the vaccine. What is different is that the pediatric dose is 1/3 that of the adult dose, measuring at 10 micrograms total.

“Having this vaccine available is really good news for our children.” said Dr. Paula Gustafson, Chief Medical Officer and pediatrician at MHP. “While children are generally at low risk for getting seriously ill from Covid, we have had a few patients admitted to Riley’s ICU, and we have had one pediatric death in the county. Not only do we want to protect our children, but we also want to keep our children from spreading the virus to other family members who would be at higher risk.”

The CDC has also approved the giving of booster vaccines for those 18 years and above.

Research has shown that the immunity from the previous Pfizer and Moderna vaccines starts to wane at 6 months, MHP said. Getting a booster shot after 6 months will help reinforce your immune system. This will keep you from getting severely ill and/or hospitalized from the virus.

Anyone 18 and older with any risk factors, who received a second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna from December 2020 through April 2021 would be due for a booster now. Getting the Covid vaccine, or the booster shot is the best thing you can do to protect yourself during this high-risk season, MHP said.
