Comedy show slated to benefit Salvation Army

Staff report

Two of the “Heavyweights of Clean Comedy” will join together again for a night of side-splitting laughs with “Front Porch Comedy” at 7 p.m. on Jan. 20 at Christi’s Off Broadway Theatre in Shelbyville.

Comedians Dennis Tooley and Brent Reed have invited some of their friends to share some laughs while recording a CD project.

Tooley and Reed first joined forces with Dan McGowan and Stephen B in 2009 for the “Heavyweights of Clean Comedy Tour.” Since both comics lost a little weight, they decided it was time for a new project and Reed suggested the “Front Porch Comedy” idea.

“It’s kind of like a couple old guys sitting out on the front porch telling stories and a couple friends stop by. Only now, we are inviting the people of central Indiana to eavesdrop on the conversation,” said Reed in a press release.

“We figure if we are going to do it, we could at least make a difference by raising some support for a great organization like the Salvation Army,” said Tooley. “I have watched how Captain Alan and Jodi Sladek love and serve the Shelbyville community and do everything they can to provide the services and care needed. We are just trying to make a small contribution to their efforts.”

Proceeds from the event will go to the Salvation Army of Shelbyville.

“We are happy to be the beneficiaries of this event,” said Alan Sladek. “We have just come through a successful Christmas kettle season and are getting ready to launch our after-school program so this event will assist us with funds for our youth programs and give us an opportunity to let Shelby County families know about these exciting programs.”

Joining Tooley and Reed on the front porch of comedy will be a newcomer to comedy, Ryan May, and a long-time friend of Tooley and Reed, Michele VanDusen.

May has been an anchor in the improv comedy troup, Point of View Comedy, and performed with Tooley several times in 2017.

VanDusen was selected as a Branson Comedy Festival All Star.

Advanced tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased at the Shelbyville Salvation Army, 136 E. Washington St.

Tickets also will be available at the door the night of the event.
