The Shelbyville Parks Department has several opportunities for families to celebrate the holidays coming up.
The Parks Department will be hosting three events in the first couple of weeks of December targeted toward children that are sure to get them ready for Christmas.
All three take place at the Carl McNeely Civic Center, 945 S. Tompkins St., in Shelbyville.
The first takes place Dec. 4 with Cookies and Canvas, a two-hour activity for children to create artwork while enjoying cookies. The first session runs from 9-11 a.m. for children in grades kindergarten through second grade; the second session is from 12-2 p.m. for grades third grade and up.
Cookies and Canvas includes canvas, cookies and hot chocolate provided by the department.
The cost is $25 per person but space is limited. Families must pre-register for their child to participate.
The second activity is the Gingerbread House Creation Class, which takes place at 2 p.m. Dec. 5.
The entire family is invited to come participate in making a gingerbread house at the center so that they can display them at home during the holiday season.
It costs $15 per gingerbread house to participate and families must register in advance.
The final event is the annual Breakfast with Santa, which takes place in the Carl McNeely Civic Center gymnasium.
There are two serving times, the first at 8:30 a.m. and the second at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 11.
Local children can meet Santa and a small Santa shop will be there to sell handmade gifts. Children can also create a holiday craft.
The cost is $7 per ticket with 200 tickets available per serving.
Families are encouraged to bring their own camera.
The breakfast will be catered by Mel’s Catering.
