As America prepares to celebrate its 244th birthday this week, Shelbyville residents were reminded at a recent event that freedom isn’t free. Rosemary Dill’s son is one of many who have paid the ultimate price.

Before U.S. Sen. Todd Young settled in to talk politics and answer questions at Pudders on the town square Friday afternoon, he surprised Dill by presenting her with a bouquet of flowers in honor of her son, Marcus Muralles. The Shelbyville resident died June 28, 2005, when the helicopter carrying him and 15 others was shot down by enemy fire in the mountains of Afghanistan.
