Out of an abundance of caution, the Shelby County Health Department has temporarily suspended the Johnson & Johnson vaccinations at its sites.
The health department will continue to offer the Moderna vaccine at Indiana Grand Casino and Occasions Banquet Hall.
Shelby County decided to stop administering Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Tuesday that six women had suffered “a rare and severe type of blood clot” after receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
This type of blood clot is particularly dangerous because doctors cannot treat it with anticoagulants as they would with other clots.
According to the CDC, all six cases occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48, and symptoms occurred within two weeks of receiving the single-shot vaccination.
The federal agencies noted that these blood clots appear to be extremely rare. As of Monday, more than 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine had been administered in the U.S.
The CDC and FDA are continuing to review the six “adverse reaction” cases.
“Until that process is complete, we are recommending a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution,” Dr. Anne Schuchat, Principal Deputy Director of the CDC, and Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in a joint statement Tuesday. “This is important, in part, to ensure that the health care provider community is aware of the potential for these adverse events and can plan for proper recognition and management due to the unique treatment required with this type of blood clot.”
People who have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine who develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination should contact their health care provider.
