After various sectional and regional tournaments last week, a few Shelby County athletes — and one team – are still alive in postseason play.
Southwestern sophomore Lilly Rooks will compete in the IHSAA Track & Field State Finals on Saturday at Ben Davis High School. Rooks qualified for state in the long jump, which begins at 3 p.m. at the start of the meet.
Waldron senior Tyler Bowlby, also a long jumper, received a call back over the weekend and will compete at state on Friday at Ben Davis. The long jump will begin at 3 p.m. at the start of the meet.
The Waldron community is planning a “send off” for Bowlby Friday in Waldron from approximately 12:45-1:30 p.m.
They are planning to line the streets before the bus pulls away from the high school at 1 p.m.
Admission for the state finals is $12 per day. A live stream will be available at IHSAAtv.org.
The Class A No. 1 Southwestern baseball team will face Shakamak on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Morristown Regional.
Seventh-ranked Oldenburg Academy and Traders Point Christian will meet in the other semifinal with the championship set for 7 p.m. Saturday night.
The Spartans (22-4) won their first sectional title since 1999 on Monday, beating Waldron 12-0. Shakamak (14-7) got past Bloomfield 4-1 for its 26th sectional title.
Oldenburg Academy is 16-7 this season. Traders Point is 8-13-1.
