Bill Garrett

Indiana University has renamed the Intramural Center on its Bloomington campus to honor Shelbyville-native Bill Garrett. Garrett was a 1947 Shelbyville High School graduate who starred for IU basketball from 1949-1951 and later played with the Harlem Globetrotters.

Indiana University has renamed the Intramural Center on its Bloomington campus in honor of Shelbyville-native Bill Garrett.

The 1947 Shelbyville graduate and Mr. Basketball, was the first black basketball player in the Big Ten Conference. Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie announced the renaming which was approved Friday by the IU Board of Trustees.
