Shelbyville High School came close to being represented at this weekend’s gymnastics state finals on the campus of Ball State University in Muncie.

Kaliyah Brown nearly earned a spot as a freshman but fell short of placing in the top-six in the vault at the Columbus East Regional.

Brown took eighth place at the regional, scoring 9.200 points. Her point total was 0.150 short of sixth place, which Bloomington North sophomore Hope Taylor took. Martinsville freshman Gabrielle Grubb took seventh with 9.250 points.

Brown finished a successful first season at the varsity level having consistently led the Golden Bears throughout the season. She won the vault six times and the all-around five times. She also won the bars three times, the floor twice and the beam one time.

She will have a shot at advancing to state next year but will likely see a lot of the same faces in next year’s tournament.

Richmond junior Elizabeth Ruger won the vault, scoring 9.750 points. Franklin Central freshman Austyn Dykes (9.600) was runner-up, followed by Columbus North junior Emily Moore (9.525), Martinsville sophomore Lillianne Boyd (9.400) and New Castle senior Samantha Ward (9.400).
