First, they were team Sectional Champions. Now, Layton Stieneker and Matthew Bunton are individual division Sectional Champions, joining the elite group of 16 teams left for regional action.
After defeating Center Grove in the first round of sectionals, Stieneker and Bunton faced Franklin Community in the championship round Thursday. The SHS number one doubles team had faced Franklin Community earlier in the year, defeating them in three sets during the second week of regular season action. However, a lot can change in two months, and Franklin Community had been on a roll in recent weeks. Stieneker and Bunton were prepared for the battle.
Stieneker and Bunton came out with rackets blazing in the first set for a 6-3 win. Then, the match drastically changed for the senior duo. They were down 0-4, and Stieneker and Bunton knew they had to get Franklin out of their momentum. A good trait for Stieneker and Bunton all season long is they never give up. They came roaring back to tie the set up at 6-All, sending it into a 7-point tiebreaker. In the end, SHS pulled in the win with a tiebreaker score of 7-5 for the straight set win and a spot in regional action.
Now sitting at 24-2, Stieneker and Bunton have impressive stats for the year. They have won 312 of 449 games played this season winning 49 of 55 sets. They now have 14 straight matches where they have won in straight sets.
Stieneker and Bunton will be back in action against the individual doubles winner from the Crawfordsville Sectional. The next round for SHS is Saturday, Oct. 17 in the Fishers High School Regional with a first round start time of 10 a.m.
